Shug Knight Shot
Listen to this article Listen to this article

Hip-hop mogul shot in Miami Beach
BY AUDRA D.S. BURCH, JACQUELINE CHARLES AND NICOLE WHITE

Hip-hop music executive Marion ''Suge'' Knight was shot early Sunday morning at a hotel in Miami Beach, where partygoers were celebrating MTV's Video Music Awards, according to several witnesses and police.
The shooting took place inside the exclusive Red Room of the Shore Club, 1901 Collins Ave.

Witnesses said Knight was sitting at a table with friends at about 12:30 a.m. when a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt walked up to him and fired at least two shots. The gunman then dashed off to the back of the bar. The crowd went into a panic and started rushing toward the door, said witnesses, who said Knight was whisked out of the hotel in a limousine. Miami Beach Police Officer Bobby Hernandez told the Associated Press that Knight was hospitalized after being shot in the leg, though witnesses said he may have been shot in the chest.
Said witness Sylvia Lu: `I saw a man walk up and start shooting. It sounded like a champagne pop. Then I saw blood in [Knight's] chest area. At the time, he was just kind of chilling. Everyone ran to the front. It was chaos.''

Doug Robinson said the mood inside the club was celebratory, with loud music and everyone having a good time. ''The music was pumping and out of nowhere came the shot,'' he said. ``Suge hit the ground, and everybody was running. It was scary.'' Knight had entered the hotel only 30 minutes before the shooting, cutting a path to a VIP table with an entourage of friends, witnesses said. In a brief interview with the Herald earlier in the evening, Knight had said he loved partying at the VMA because it was so good to see ``everybody's just getting along.''

Knight co-founded the pioneering rap label Death Row Records and hit the charts in the 1990s with West Coast stars including Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur. Knight was convicted in 1992 of assault and weapons violations and was placed on probation. In 1996, he was jailed for five years for violating probation after he and several associates, including Shakur, were recorded on videotape beating a gang rival at a Las Vegas hotel. Shakur was later shot to death in Las Vegas.

Relatives of slain rapper Notorious B.I.G. have also accused Knight of involvement in B.I.G.'s death, though police have never named Knight as a suspect. Knight continues to operate his label, now called Tha Row.

Marc Ecko Block Party Today!
Listen to this article Listen to this article

Marc Ecko, designer and "Navigator of Youth Culture," is set to recruit the legends of Hip-Hop culture for the upcoming Marc Ecko's Getting Up Block Party. The first-of-it-kind street festival, free to the public and held August 24th on 22nd Street between 10th and 11th Avenues from 12:00PM – 8:00PM, will feature graffiti demonstrations, live DJs and surprise musical performances in celebration of the golden age of Hip-Hop. The event coincides with the anticipated release of Atari's graffiti-based videogame, Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure.

As a throwback to graffiti's glory days, "Marc Ecko's Getting Up Block Party" will feature ten 48-foot-long by 8-foot-high replicas of the legendary NYC transit blue-bird subway cars Ed Walker, Jr., which will be transformed into contemporary urban works of art by renowned graffiti writers.

A lineup of legendary artists, from the notorious 'Bronx bomber and destroyer' COPE2 to T-KID (Terrible Kid), who first started writing on trains as early as 1974, will spend the day doing full color murals on the vintage trains.

Other participating graf writers include DASH, WEST, CES, SONIC, IZ THE WIZ, MIN, DURO, WANE, WEN, DERO, CYCLE, SMITH, PINK, DOC, KEL 1st, MARE139, CRASH, DAZE, SUB, GHOST, and the famous TATS CREW.

Blue-birds, a high point of nostalgia for historians and artists alike, were often used as an urban canvas by graffiti writers throughout the 1980s before blasting machines and buffers were used to strip them clean, effectively putting an end to the era of graffiti artwork on the sides of trains.

"Graffiti is without question the most powerful art movement in recent history and has been a driving inspiration throughout my career," said Marc Ecko, Executive Creative Director for Getting Up. "I'm honored to be bringing its pioneering creative forces together to look back on its tradition and to celebrate its future."

In addition to reviving an old school graffiti tradition, the block party will offer guests the opportunity to participate in live demos of Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure and experience the first truly authentic video game based on urban culture and graffiti. The videogame, which is being published by Atari and developed by The Collective for a Fall 2005 release, brings together over 65 legendary graffiti writers, six of whom will serve as in-game mentors to its protagonist, Trane.

Event sponsors include GameStop Corp., Truth (www.thetruth.com), Toy Tokyo (www.toytokyo.com), Montana paint and Mass Appeal magazine.

SunN.Y. Freestyle Marathon
Listen to this article Listen to this article

SunN.Y. 24-hour “Overnight Celebrity” Freestyle Marathon @ AllHipHop.com
In the event to end all online freestyle events, SunN.Y. will attempt a stunt never before tried, the first-ever 24-hour freestyle marathon.

On Wednesday, September 7th at 3 PM, every hour on the hour for 24 straight hours, SunN.Y. will unleash a new freestyle on the world, on a subject chosen by a vote of the community, fans and haters alike, during the previous hour. The freestyles will be posted immediately on the web, to be scrutinized, lionized, analyzed, contemplated, investigated, and evaluated by the community.

Will he make it through the ultimate test? SunN.Y. will step into the ring alone with his rhymes. His skills will be tested. His endurance will be challenged. His will to succeed will be assaulted. Can his skills stay sharp for 24 hours with no sleep, no pager, no entourage, on a diet of Whoppers and Sprite? Will he own the day, or will the haters. The only way to know is to log on.

How It Works:
Starting at 3PM Wednesday September 7th, the voting for freestyle subjects will be open to the public. 1/2 an hour later, the first vote will commence. Promptly at 4PM, SunN.Y will emerge from his isolation booth. The host will reveal to SunN.Y and the online audience the subject of the freestyle. On the spot, SunN.Y. will start to spit, and minutes later; the end product will be posted via audio streams on the site.

Immediately after, the voting for the next freestyle will begin, and SunN.Y. will emerge again at the top of the hour. An hour-by-hour ranking of the top rhymes will be posted, and at the end, the whole thing will be available for download at AllHipHop.com Just days later, the Freestyle Marathon mixtape will be available as a bonus to anyone who buys “Overnight Celebrity” the first week it’s out.

No one has ever tried this before. It’s a stunt worthy of Houdini or David Blaine, and it all unfolds on Allhiphop.com at 3 PM EST on Wednesday September 7.

Charlie Murphy: "Chappelle's Is Over"
Listen to this article Listen to this article

Charlie Murphy: "Chappelle's Is Over"
by Anthony Layser , TVGuide.com

Charlie Murphy wants people to know he's no Frank Stallone or Tito Jackson. He's no "not-as-famous-sibling" gimmick. Judging by the sales for Chappelle's Show DVDs, many may already be well aware of this. After spending more than a decade in the shadow of his superstar brother, Eddie, Murphy's antics as a cast member on Chappelle's have finally made him his own man. Currently he is selling out comedy clubs and has a slate of movies, the last of which, King's Ransom, recently hit video stores. Insider spoke with Murphy about his career and the fate of the show that spurred millions to holler, "I'm Rick James, bitch!"

TV Guide: Your first introduction to show business was as your brother Eddie's bodyguard. Now you're coming off a major role on one of the most popular shows on TV. Did you foresee that kind of career path?

Charlie Murphy: No. I never really had any clear-cut path in mind. When I was working as a bodyguard, I came across all these people who were involved in show business and I got to be like a fly on the wall. I learned a lot from that.

TV Guide: Is it difficult to be a performer who happens to be related to Eddie Murphy?

Murphy: You've got to remember, my brother is universally recognized as one of the best stand-ups ever. So there's going be those who say, "Wait a minute, this guy is Eddie's older brother. That means that the whole time we were enjoying Eddie this guy was around. Why wasn't he doing it then?" The consensus might be, "Maybe it's because he sucks or wasn't good." I erase that by showing up.

TV Guide: Critics trashed King's Ransom, but in quite a few of those reviews you were singled out for being really funny. Are you the only thing that makes the movie worth watching?

Murphy: I do end up being the guy that a lot of people like when they're watching the movie, but it's not like I'm the main character. I did King's Ransom right after coming off the second season of Chappelle's Show, so other people involved in King's Ransom got bigger billing, more money, bigger parts, the whole nine. I didn't complain about that. I went and did the best job possible — another instance of Charlie paying his dues.

TV Guide: What is the status Chappelle's Show's third season? [Titular host Dave Chappelle went AWOL in May, bringing production to a halt.] Will it ever air?

Murphy: Nah, not on television. We shot over half the season, man. Season 3 is ready. But if they're not going to show it right now... when? Are they going to show it next year?

TV Guide: What do you think Comedy Central will do with the eight episodes that have already been shot? Murphy: I don't know. They had a big screening where they looked at the episodes and everyone was happy with what they had. They have possession of it. [My guess is] it'll go straight to DVD and they'll say, "Here's the Season 2 DVD for sale for Christmas — and it [will have] Season 3's unseen footage."

TV Guide: So is that it for Chappelle's Show?

Murphy: Chappelle's Show is over, man. Done. It took me a long time to be able to say those words, but I can say it pretty easy now, because it's the truth. There's no way to get around it. It's a new day. I'm disappointed it ended the way it did, but I'm not angry with anybody. Chappelle's Show was like the Tupac of TV shows. It came out, it got everybody's attention, it was a bright shining star, but it burned out and for some strange reason, it burned out quick. The two seasons I acted on that show made me a star. Now I can go out and do stand-up. I'm getting movie offers. It's off the hook. Me getting to the next level or whatever's going to happen is going to come from the next things I do, but Chappelle's Show served its purpose and I'll always be grateful

Playgirl disses Marques Houston
Listen to this article Listen to this article

Marques Houston has played himself in the eyes of Playgirl magazine. Playgirl magazine reached out to Allhiphop.com in a telling e-mail and told Allhiphop.com that some of this chit chatter about $2 million to pose nude was false. At first it was $1 million...then his rep.'s said $2 million...now Playgirl says it was NO MILLION!

PLAYGIRL stated, We've been monitoring the Marques rumor mill via your site and we're ready to put the kabosh on his publicity teams abuse of our name to get him his 15 seconds. So heres what we've got to say about the situation: Marques Houston is not going to be in Playgirl. We didnt offer him a million; we certainly didnt offer him $2 million. We emphatically stand by the fact that we do not pay celebrities to appear in our magazine and certainly not at a rate of $1 million an inch (so we've heard from those who saw the goods). However, as our way of tipping our caps to someone who has so blatantly abused the privilege (even though we have called multiple Marques representatives to insist he stop the name-dropping) we are putting together a special Marques Houston surprise in our November issue. It hits newsstands Oct. 11.

What does Playgirl have in store for Marques Houston? Stay tuned......
